Status is always in play—on stage, off stage, in every moment of human interaction. It shapes relationships, drives tension, and, as Keith Johnstone noted, commands the audience’s attention whenever it shifts.

In this two-day intensive led by master improviser William Hall, we’ll go far beyond the clichés of “high” and “low” status. You’ll gain a nuanced understanding of how status subtly rises and falls in conversation, movement, and silence—and how those shifts can supercharge your scenes with truth, tension, and humor.

Through focused exercises and scene work, you’ll explore:

  • The unspoken status games we play in daily life—and how they come alive on stage
  • Tools to raise or lower status with authenticity, agility, and purpose
  • How power dynamics shape compelling characters, relationships, and narratives
  • Ways to heighten your real-world status awareness—and use it to unlock spontaneity and presence

This is a full two-day workshop and attendance on both days is required. We build from foundational concepts on Day One to advanced applications on Day Two—so showing up halfway through means missing the engine of the experience.

Whether you’re a performer, teacher, or someone fascinated by the mechanics of human behavior, this workshop offers deep insight into the forces that shape every interaction. No prior improv experience is necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to explore.

Discover why status is the hidden current of powerful scenes—and how mastering it can transform your improv, your storytelling, and the way you engage with the world.
